Could we replace history and recreate its past as a story? When does a fact become a story and how does a story become history?
Tracing Contraband is an ongoing project that focus on the history and stories of contraband in Portugal and Spain during the dictatorships of Estado Novo and Franco, in force until 1974.Under these dictatorships, a prominent political and economic instability was a sad reality.
Smuggling was often the only form of livelihood which could take a belly out of its misery. The smuggler was, back then and now, seen as an heroic figure as long as his activity would represent a form of protest and bravery against the implemented governments. Being a fiscal guard, on the other hand, would ensure social status and it was way to copeand endure the political regime. Often, smugglers and fiscal guards were from the same family. Nights were the territory where this practice took place. The photographs were taken at the border between Portugal and Spain where Smuggling was a common practice.
Alcoutim, Marvão, Bairro de São Roque, Alfaiates, Vila Escargio, Duque D’Ávila are some of these locations.
